Window Breakage of Chinese-Made Tesla Priced at $16,800 Alarms Speculations
Amid the ongoing cold wave, damage cases of some Tesla models produced in China are rapidly emerging.
On the 20th, online communities were flooded with reports that the rear glass of the Tesla ‘Y RWD’ model had suddenly shattered.
In the pictures shared by the car owners, the corners of the rear vehicle glass appear to be broken as if they have received a strong impact. Another car owner confirmed a similar case of shattered corners.
The car owners who posted the damage cases unanimously claimed that “no accidents occurred that would cause the vehicle to receive an external impact,” and argued that “it was damaged due to the cold.”
In particular, they explained that “commonly, Chinese-made glass was used.”
Some car owners questioned, “Isn’t it a quality control issue since it was produced in China?” and suggested that “this is a matter that should be recalled.”
In response, many netizens are speculating that the cause is a ‘spontaneous breakage’ phenomenon. This refers to the phenomenon where tempered glass shatters on its own without external impact due to high temperatures or cold. It often occurs in PC cases or shower booths.
The Tesla ‘Y RWD’ involved in the accidents is a mid-size sedan-style fastback SUV released in March 2020. Although Tesla is an American brand, this model was produced in China.
Unlike the models produced in the U.S., the ‘Y RWD’ is equipped with a Lithium Iron Phosphate (LEP) battery, which is distinctive for being about 20 million won (approximately $17,000) cheaper than existing vehicles. Due to its lower price, it has gained significant attention in South Korea, selling over 10,000 units in just three months since its official release in September.
Currently, Tesla Korea has not released an official statement.
