China’s New Energy Vehicle Goal Reached Well Ahead of Schedule

China is expected to achieve its goal of a 50% adoption rate for new energy vehicles ten years ahead of schedule, according to a government official, as reported by China Daily on January 22, 2024. Miao Wei, the former Minister of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), stated at the founding conference of the China All-Solid-State Battery Collaboration Innovation Platform, an industry platform leading the development of all-solid-state batteries, that China’s development of new energy vehicles has entered a new phase of comprehensive market expansion. As a result, the adoption rate of new energy vehicles could reach 50% as early as 2025.

In 2020, China set a goal for more than 50% of all automobile sales to be new energy vehicles by 2035. Miao Wei added that the battery, the core of new energy vehicles, is also gaining momentum, with China leading the global race. He emphasized the need for the commercialization of China’s all-solid-state batteries.

All-solid-state batteries are widely recognized as a promising solution to overcome the limitations of existing lithium-ion batteries.

At the conference, platform founder and member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Ouyang Minggao, said all-solid-state batteries are the key battleground for next-generation battery technology and are expected to be industrialized by 2030, according to China Daily. He said that while China is a world leader in the lithium-ion batteries field, there is still a long way to go to commercialize all-solid-state batteries. He called for more joint efforts to develop these batteries to maintain China’s advantage in batteries on the world stage.
