Hyundai Motor Group Introduces Active Air Skirt to Enhance Electric Vehicle Efficiency

After developing technologies such as Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), Continuously Variable Valve Duration (CCVD), and Active Shift Control (ASC), Hyundai Motor and Kia Corporation announced a new technology called Active Air Skirt (AAS) that is designed to improve the range and stability of electric vehicles.

AAS is a retractable air deflector installed under an electric vehicle’s front bumper. It is activated at 80 km/h (approximately 50 mph) or higher when air resistance becomes a major factor in fuel consumption. The deflector extends to cover the front wheels, helping to reduce turbulence and improve airflow.

In addition to improving range, AAS can also help to enhance stability at high speeds of over 200 km/h (approx. 124 mph). The deflector helps create downforce, which keeps ice from being planted on the road.

The deflector extends to cover only the front wheels due to the uniqueness of the E-GMP platform. The bottom of the platform is flat, making it more aerodynamic to cover the tire portion exclusively.

AAS is still under development, but it has the potential to be a major breakthrough in electric vehicle technology. It could help to make electric vehicles more efficient, affordable, and practical for everyday use.

Hyundai Motor and Kia Corporation conducted tests on a Genesis GV60 equipped with AAS. The tests showed that AAS reduced the vehicle’s drag coefficient by 0.008, which translates to a 2.8% improvement in fuel economy. The GV60 with AAS can travel 6 kilometers on a single charge.

Hyundai and Kia have filed related patents in Korea and the United States and plan to review mass production after durability and performance tests.

A spokesperson from Hyundai and Kia conveyed that they anticipate the new technology to be especially beneficial for models like SUVs, where enhancing aerodynamic performance can be more challenging. They affirmed their commitment to advancing the aerodynamic efficiency of their electric vehicles to enhance driving performance and stability.
