Volkswagen Reveals Updated 8th Gen Golf with Cutting-Edge AI Chatbot

Volkswagen introduced a partially updated version of the 8th generation Golf. In a move reminiscent of the Passat and Tiguan models, the latest Golf will boast an electric vehicle (EV) driving range of approximately 62 miles. It will include two plug-in hybrid variants with DC charging capabilities.

This unveiling follows the introduction of new models for the Passat and Tiguan at the close of August and September, respectively. In contrast, the Golf receives a partial update. Volkswagen initially launched the Golf 8 in October 2019 and introduced two plug-in hybrid versions in August 2020.

As part of this partial update, the Golf has transitioned to the latest MQB drive system. One of the most notable enhancements is the battery’s net energy capacity increase, rising from 13 kWh to 19.7 kWh. This boost enables an extended driving range of up to 62 miles per WLTP standards.

Moreover, the charging capabilities have been upgraded. The Golf can now be charged from an AC charger at a rate of 11 kW, a substantial improvement from the previous 3.6 kW. Additionally, it can be charged rapidly, up to 50 kW, via a DC charger.

In the plug-in hybrid version, a different internal combustion engine is employed, replacing the previous 1.4-liter gasoline engine from the EA211 series with the 1.5 TSI EVO2, also known as the EA211 EVO. The Golf offers two performance levels for its plug-in hybrid variants: the Golf eHybrid boasts a system output of 150 kW, while the Golf GTE delivers 200 kW.

The GTE distinguishes itself as a sportier model, incorporating some iconic design elements from the Golf GTI, such as checkered seat accents. Notably, blue accents are featured exclusively on the GTE, as opposed to the traditional red accents. The facelift introduces subtle changes in design, including a more defined front fascia and fresh lighting graphics in the headlights. An illuminated Volkswagen emblem is integrated for the first time, complemented by new 3D lighting patterns on the rear lights.

A new infotainment system with a 13-inch large touchscreen and revised menu navigation features are employed for the interior. The touch slider at the bottom of the screen, which had been criticized, is now featured with lights, and the touch surface of the steering wheel is completely removed and replaced with conventional buttons.

The AI chatbot ChatGPT unveiled at CES 2024, has been integrated into Volkswagen’s voice assistant, IDA. With this, the system can access a constantly growing artificial intelligence database.

Thomas Schäfer, CEO of Volkswagen Passenger Cars, said, “The Golf has been at the heart of the Volkswagen brand for half a century and has provided mobility to everyone at a reasonable price and the highest technical level. We are building this through new evolutionary progress equipped with higher efficiency, comfort, quality, and a new operating concept. The Golf couldn’t be better than this.”

Volkswagen did not provide information on the release date or price of the partially modified Golf model.
