Rivian Rolls Out Budget-Friendly Battery Options for R1T and R1S

U.S. electric vehicle startup Rivian announced it will provide two new budget-friendly battery options for its R1T electric pickup truck and R1S electric SUV (pictured above). The battery capacities are 106 kWh and 121 kWh, respectively.

So far, Rivian has offered two options: a large battery with a capacity of 135 kWh and a max battery of 149 kWh. The new battery pack options are called Standard and Standard Plus. Rivian says the former offers a capacity of 106 kWh and a maximum driving range of 270 miles. The larger 121 kWh battery pack provides a driving range of 315 miles. However, these are Rivian’s own figures, not official EPA numbers.

Both models can be purchased at a price reduced by approximately $3,100. The Rivian R1T pickup truck now costs $69,900 for a variant equipped with a dual motor AWD and a standard battery pack. If equipped with the Standard Plus battery, the same vehicle costs $73,000.

The R1S electric SUV starts at $84,000. In both cases, customers can choose the Performance Dual Motor AWD for an additional $5,000 when they select the Standard Plus battery pack.

Meanwhile, Rivian recently began offering R1S renting services in the U.S., which means customers can benefit from a $7,500 tax credit.

Rivian exceeded its initial annual target of 54,000 by selling 57,232 electric vehicles in 2023. Rivian currently produces the R1T pickup, R1S SUV, and Amazon’s EDV (Electric Delivery Van) on separate lines.

Also, Rivian received final approval from the relevant authorities to construct its second factory in November 2023. The new factory in Georgia will be able to produce 200,000 electric vehicles per year in its first expansion phase and is expected to go into operation in 2024. By 2030, it is expected to produce 400,000 electric vehicles annually.
