Samsung Display’s foldable panel has received “military spec” certification from the U.S. Department of Defense’s durability standard test. Samsung Display is the first to receive the certification for its foldable panel.

Samsung Display announced on the 19th that its 7-inch foldable panel, used in the latest foldable smartphones, has passed the MIL-STD 810G test, a military standard recognized by the U.S. Department of Defense. This standard, or “mil-spec,” evaluates whether a product can operate normally without damage in extreme usage environments and stressful situations.

Samsung Display conducted tests on four items related to temperature and shock that can be encountered in daily and outdoor activities.

The test results showed that Samsung Display’s foldable panel worked normally even after being sprayed with water in a minus 10-degree environment, freezing the outside of the panel into 0.24-inch thick ice and maintaining that state for four hours. It also withstood environments of minus 32 degrees and 63 degrees for two hours each continuously, and there was no problem in the test that repeated such rapid temperature changes three times over 12 hours.

Its performance was also proven in shock tests. The panel survived twenty-six drop tests from 4 feet, the typical height at which people use their phones, with the direction of the fall set differently each time. There were also no issues when it was rotated at a speed up to 10.5 times the force of gravity.

Cho Yong Seok, Marketing Team Leader of Samsung Display’s Small and Medium Business Division, said, “Through this military spec certification, it has been confirmed that Samsung Display has a solid technological edge in the foldable display market that has established itself as the next-generation form factor.” He added, “We expect that the foldable panel will be used in a wider range of devices and environments, leaving behind the prejudice that foldable displays lack durability.”
