‘Squid Game’ Star Oh Young Soo Convicted Of Sexual Misconduct At 79

“Squid Game” star Oh Young Soo has received a verdict in his first trial.

On March 15, the South Korean court found Oh Young-soo guilty of misconduct and issued a suspended sentence. Judge Jeong Yeon Ju of the Suwon District Court sentenced him to eight months in prison, suspended for two years, and ordered him to complete a program on sexual violence prevention.

On February 2, in the final arguments of the trial, the prosecution called for a one-year prison sentence for Mr. Oh. They argued that his actions, including an apology text that felt dismissive, demonstrated a lack of remorse and responsibility for the alleged offense.

In defense, Mr. Oh’s lawyer argued for leniency. They pointed out the absence of evidence beyond the victim’s testimony and any evidence derived from it. Additionally, they cast doubt on the alleged offense, questioning its location, timing, and surrounding circumstances.

In his final statement, Mr. Oh expressed his hardship, “It’s hard and painful to stand in court. I feel miserable, and my whole life is falling apart.”

Mr. Oh was indicted in November 2022 on charges of sexually harassing a woman, Ms. A, twice by hugging her and kissing her on the cheek on a walkway while preparing for a theater performance in a certain region in the summer of 2017. However, Mr. Oh denied the allegations in court.

Oh was charged in November 2022 with misconduct against a woman, Ms. A, in 2017 by hugging and kissing her on the cheek while preparing for a theater performance. He maintained his innocence throughout the court proceedings.

Oh, who gained fame as the “old man” in Netflix’s “Squid Game,” was the first Korean actor to receive the Best Supporting Actor award at the Golden Globes in January 2022.
