Egypt is facing a perplexing situation due to a rapid increase in birth rates.

According to Bloomberg, on the 5th (local time), Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi held a cabinet meeting and revealed plans to enforce birth control policies and concerns about population growth.

President El-Sisi expressed concerns during the cabinet meeting, stating, “If we do not regulate childbirth, disaster will strike,” and “The issue of overpopulation is a significant burden on Egyptian society. The government budget allocated for education and healthcare cannot be sustained as it is now.”

Since coming to power in 2014, President El-Sisi has consistently advocated for birth control policies, even promoting the slogan ‘Two is enough.’

Egypt’s population surpassed 100 million in 2020, with an increase of approximately 15 million people every 10 years.

Due to the population growth exceeding the government’s expectations, Egypt has encountered economic problems. It has been reported that the proportion of the population earning less than 50% of the median income in Egypt increased from 27.8% in 2015 to 31.9% in 2020.

Egypt’s unemployment rate is approaching 7%. In July, the inflation rate reached a staggering 36.5%, leading to concerns of an economic collapse.

For now, the Egyptian government has decided to distribute public subsidies to alleviate the difficulties faced by the impoverished population. According to foreign news outlets, it has been reported that approximately 70 million Egyptian citizens are receiving emergency food support.
