A couple who fell in love at work tied the knot, but the honeymoon phase didn’t last long. The wife accused her husband of hiding his sexual dysfunction from her and threatened to spread rumors about him at their workplace. She was eventually fined for her actions.

On the 18th, Judge Kim Jae-yun of Changwon District Court sentenced Mrs. A to a fine of 700,000 Korean Won (approximately $600) for threats and special assault. The mother-in-law, identified as Mrs. B, received the same penalty.

Previously, Mrs. A legally married her husband, Mr. C, in January 2021. However, just nine months later, in October of the same year, divorce proceedings began as Mrs. A filed for divorce, and Mr. C countersued.

According to the indictment, Mrs. A threatened Mr. C at their newly-wed home in September of the same year, saying, “I’ll make sure everyone knows that you hid your sexual dysfunction before marrying me. Let’s see how your social life goes after that. Better apologize.”

Also present at the time, mother-in-law Mrs. B yelled at Mr. C, asking, “Did you hide your sexual dysfunction before getting married?” She then threw a dining chair and a laundry drying rack at him, causing injuries to his arm.

Both the wife and mother-in-law deny the allegations of threats and assault.

The court stated, “Generally speaking, she informed him of a specific harm that could instill fear in Mr. C.” The court further elaborated, “Even if she didn’t intend to spread rumors or post on the internet, the intention of committing a crime of threat does not require carrying out the threatened harm.”

The court continued, “This cannot simply be dismissed as emotional, verbal abuse or a momentary display of anger. Furthermore, the facts that a dining chair and laundry rack were thrown at the victim have all been proven.” It concluded, “Given the circumstances, it appears that this crime occurred as divorce-related conflicts escalated. Considering this is a first offense and the victim desires punishment, the sentence is thus determined.”
