A summit meeting between U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping is likely to be held in San Francisco, USA, on the 15th (local time).

A high-ranking U.S. administration official revealed on the 7th that they are coordinating to hold a summit meeting between President Biden and President Xi on the 15th, according to a report by the Nihon Keizai Shimbun (Nikkei) on the 8th.

President Biden is likely to have a summit meeting with President Xi the day after he arrives in San Francisco on the 14th to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit. If the two leaders meet, it will be a year since they met in Bali, Indonesia, where the G20 summit was held on November 14, last year.

Ahead of the U.S. presidential election in November next year, both the Democratic and Republican parties are taking a hard line against China. However, the Biden administration plans to maintain a communication line between the U.S. and Chinese leaders to avoid accidental clashes or unilateral deterioration of relations due to misunderstandings and misjudgments in the context of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the ongoing war between Israel and the Palestinian armed group Hamas, according to Nikkei.

President Biden told Wang Yi, a member of the Chinese Central Political Bureau and Foreign Minister, at the White House on the 27th of last month, “Both countries should manage competition responsibly and maintain an open line of communication.”

Ahead of the summit meeting between President Biden and President Xi, U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen is expected to meet with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng, Xi’s economic adviser, in San Francisco on the 9th and 10th to explore solutions to economic issues such as high tariffs and export regulations.
