A woman in her twenties who had taken the drug philopon was arrested by the police after attempting to forcibly open the emergency door on a passenger plane mid-flight.

The Incheon International Airport Police announced on the 23rd that they are investigating Ms. A (26, female) for violating the Aviation Security Act and suspicion of drug abuse under the Narcotics Control Act.

Ms. A is accused of trying to forcibly open the emergency door on a Korean Air passenger plane heading from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, USA to Incheon International Airport around 2 a.m. the previous day. Ten hours into the flight, around noon the previous day, she began showing signs of anxiety and tried several times to open the emergency door, but was restrained by the flight attendants.

The police conducted a preliminary drug test on Ms. A when she arrived at Incheon Airport around 6 p.m. the previous day, and she was urgently arrested when the test showed a positive reaction for drugs. The investigation revealed that Ms. A had been in New York for more than six months before entering the country the previous day and had no history of psychiatric treatment.

A police official said, “Ms. A is babbling during the investigation,” and “We have requested a detailed appraisal from the National Forensic Service to confirm the type and amount of drugs she took.”

Previously in June, a teenage passenger addicted to philopon caused a disturbance on a Jeju Air passenger plane mid-flight, threatening to open the emergency door. He was sentenced to three years in prison along with a mandatory 40-hour drug addiction treatment program during the first trial held on the 20th of last month.

According to the Aviation Security Act, passengers who attempt to operate the emergency door on the aircraft without the direction of the flight attendant can be sentenced to up to ten years in prison.
