The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) announced on the 18th, “Our military detected a short-range ballistic missile (SRBM) launched by North Korea from the Pyongyang area towards the East Sea at around 10:38 PM the previous day.”

The JCS conveyed, “The North Korean ballistic missile landed in the East Sea after flying approximately 354 miles, and our military has been tracking the preparations for the ballistic missile launch in close cooperation with the U.S.”

They further explained, “We immediately detected and monitored the launch of the North Korean ballistic missile, closely shared information related to the North Korean ballistic missile with the U.S. and Japan, and are currently analyzing the detailed specifications.”

Furthermore, they condemned, “This launch of a ballistic missile by North Korea is a clear provocation that violates the UN Security Council Resolution prohibiting the use of ballistic missile technology and scientific and technical cooperation.”

The JCS emphasized, “Our military will maintain the ability and posture to respond overwhelmingly to any provocation under the solid South Korea-U.S. combined defense posture while keeping a close eye on various activities in North Korea.”

Previously, North Korea launched an SRBM into the East Sea on the 17th, marking the 12th anniversary of Kim Jong Il’s death. The launch of North Korea’s ballistic missile comes 26 days after the launch from the Sunan area in Pyongyang towards the East Sea at 11:05 PM on the 22nd of last month.
