On December 31st, the Democratic Party of Korea issued a strong condemnation of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s recent remarks, in which he asserted that reunification with South Korea was an impossible goal.

During a briefing at the National Assembly, party spokesperson Kang Sun Woo expressed concern, stating, “Chairman Kim Jong Un’s declaration that ‘unification with South Korea cannot be achieved’ has further heightened tensions in the already strained inter-Korean relationship.” Kang characterized Kim’s remarks as “a perilous notion that categorizes the relationship between South and North Korea, both of which aspire to peace and reunification, as hostile.”

In addition, Kang strongly criticized Kim’s willingness to drive the Korean Peninsula into the depths of conflict potentially, cautioning, “We cannot tolerate efforts to rationalize actions such as the advancement of nuclear capabilities and the launching of additional military reconnaissance satellites.”

Kang also held the Yoon Suk Yeol administration accountable, stating, “The Yoon government, which has only adhered to a North Korea policy biased by ideological prejudice under the guise of peace by force, cannot escape responsibility. The actions of the Yoon government not only solidified the ‘new Cold War on the Korean Peninsula’ but also rejected any attempts at dialogue with North Korea, did they not?”

She continued, Our path should be one of dialogue rather than confrontation, mutual respect instead of conflict, and peaceful reunification over threats.” Furthermore, she urged President Yoon to “put forward measures for the recovery of inter-Korean relations aimed at peaceful coexistence so that the people are not anxious.”
