North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un’s Expensive SUV Sparks Debate Amid UN Sanctions

In a seeming mockery of international sanctions, North Korea has flaunted a new luxury vehicle for Kim Jong Un.

South Korea’s Ministry of Unification responded,  “We will meticulously track down detailed information about the vehicle reported in the North Korean media and its acquisition route in conjunction with relevant agencies.”

The Mercedes-Maybach sports utility vehicle (SUV) appears to be the new official car for Kim Jong Un, the leader of North Korea. A black SUV, which seems to be Kim’s new official car, was spotted in the documentary The Great Transition, Victory, and Transformation of 2023 broadcasted by North Korea’s Central Television on the 15th. It is presumed to be the Mercedes-Maybach GLS600 model, with the leader’s mark engraved in the center of the back door. For Use Only in the Republic of Korea. The above remark came from Kim In Ae, the deputy spokesperson for the Ministry of Unification of South Korea,  in a regular press briefing held on the same day. Deputy spokesperson Kim responded to reporters’ questions regarding Kim’s new official car.

The Deputy spokesperson emphasized, “The import of luxury goods into North Korea is prohibited under the sanctions of the UN Security Council, and we urge all countries not to condone North Korea’s sanction-violating activities.”

In the documentary televised on the 15th by North Korea’s Central Television, Kim was seen getting out of a car presumed to be the Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 model.

Regarding the agenda of North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui’s visit to Russia, Deputy Spokesperson Kim explained, “Since no specific detail has been made clear officially, we will not make presumptions and keep an eye on North Korea’s situation, cooperating with relevant agencies.” But spokesperson Kim said, “However, we consider it highly probable that Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, paid a visit to North Korea. It is highly likely to have happened because both countries have made official announcements about holding summit conferences, along with other matters.”

But as for Vladimir Putin’s visit to North Korea, it is highly plausible since there have been official announcements from both countries about the North Korea-Russia summit and other matters.”
