Porsche Taycan Turbo GT Crushes Tesla Model S Plaid Record at Nürburgring

Porsche Regains Its Pride with a New Record at the ‘Nürburgring’ Track After Losing to Tesla

Opened in 1927, this site is considered one of the most challenging circuits in the world due to its total length of 26km, numerous blind corners, narrow lanes, and significant elevation changes.

Setting a lap time world record at the Nürburgring circuit is a tremendous honor for drivers and car manufacturers. There’s fierce competition among manufacturers to set world records in various categories. Recently, Porsche reclaimed its record from Tesla, which is becoming a hot topic.

Porsche reclaimed the title after 7 months by achieving a lap time of 7 minutes and 7.55 seconds

Porsche announced on the 3rd that it set a new record of 7 minutes and 7.55 seconds at the Nürburgring Nordschleife with its electric car, the Taycan. The Taycan, a high-performance electric vehicle unveiled in 2019, is soon due for a facelift. This record was achieved with a prototype of the facelift model, specifically the top-spec Turbo GT.

Previously, in August 2022, Porsche set a record of 7 minutes and 33.35 seconds with the Taycan Turbo S Performance Package, claiming the title of “fastest production electric sedan.” However, in June last year, Tesla took this title with the Model S Plaid, achieving 7 minutes and 25.231 seconds, creating a gap of more than 8 seconds with Porsche.

How does the Model S Plaid performance compare?

However, the lap time achieved by the Taycan Turbo GT prototype is 26 seconds faster than the previous record and more than 17 seconds ahead of the Tesla Model S Plaid. It’s even just 2.25 seconds shy of the current Nürburgring electric production car record held by the ‘Rimac Nevera,’ an electric hypercar with multiple Guinness records for acceleration and top speed, boasting a combined output of 1,914 horsepower.

Meanwhile, the Tesla Model S Plaid, which had been leading Porsche for some time, produces a combined output of 1,020 horsepower and a maximum torque of 132.7 kg.m. Based on its powerful performance, it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.1 seconds, with a standard top speed of 280 km/h and 322 km/h with the Track Pack applied.

Its endurance is said to be extraordinary. What can be expected of the performance? Meanwhile, Porsche reported that this lap time was not a one-off but was consistently achieved within a one-second margin in multiple attempts, indicating that the Taycan can maintain consistent performance even under the harsh conditions of a demanding circuit. The performance of the Taycan Turbo GT has not been disclosed yet, but the industry expects it to surpass a combined output of 1,000 horsepower with a tri-motor setup.
