On the 3rd, Health Chosun covered this content. They shed light on the dangers of typical drinking habits and alcohol dependence associated with each type.

Alcohol dependence is when one cannot control or stop drinking voluntarily.

If a person’s tongue gets twisted and repeats the same words after drinking, it is considered a significant progression of alcohol dependence, even if they drank less than usual.

In the early and middle stages, liver damage is minimal, so even with increased alcohol consumption, one may not get intoxicated. However, liver function significantly declines in the late stage, leading to a faster reaction to alcohol.

Another phenomenon called “blackout” is more likely to occur in the early stages of alcohol dependence. It is a symptom caused by alcohol interfering with the chemical storage of new memories in the hippocampus and frontal lobe of the brain. If the film breaks more than twice within six months, caution is advised.

Having trouble falling asleep is also an unfavorable habit. To metabolize alcohol, the body needs more than twice the usual amount of oxygen in the bloodstream. As a result, the amount of oxygen supplied to the brain decreases, causing drowsiness. If one drinks again after waking up, they may be exposed to alcohol dependence.

Survey results related to alcohol consumption rates are also noteworthy.

According to the “Community Health Survey” conducted jointly by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, local governments, health centers, and universities, Gangwon Province has the highest high-risk drinking rate among all provinces in the country.

Among the areas in Gangwon Province, Jeongseon County (22.1%) ranked first regarding high-risk drinking. This means that one of every two people in the area enjoys such drinking habits.

Following Jeongseon County, Yanggu County (21.5%) and Hongcheon County (20.6%) ranked 2nd and 3rd, respectively. The top four areas, including Cheorwon County (20%), in terms of high-risk drinking, exceeded 20% in Gangwon Province.
