A video of a woman in China walking a fish on a leash on a rainy day has sparked sympathy and concern across the internet. On November 21 (local time), the British newspaper Daily Mail posted a video on its official Facebook page titled “Woman walking her fish on a wet road in China.”

The released video shows a Chinese woman under an umbrella on a rainy day, carrying a bag in her left hand and a fish on a leash in her right hand as she crosses a crosswalk. The video, shot on October 25 in Guangdong, China, shows the fish barely breathing and struggling as it is dragged along the wet road. The fish, believed to be a catfish, is also seen sliding across the damp crosswalk, with its head and tail swishing from side to side.

People who saw the video criticized the woman’s actions, saying, “This isn’t a walk, it’s abuse,” “I couldn’t believe my eyes,” and “This is a cruel act.”

However, some pointed out, “Some catfish have poisonous spines, so dragging them might be safer than getting stung.”

Most species of catfish have sharp spines on their pectoral and dorsal fins.

Some, like the stinging catfish, even have venomous spines, and their slimy bodies make them more prone to getting cut by the spines than other fish.

Therefore, care must be taken when handling catfish; a single struggle could result in a painful cut.

However, despite the availability of other transportation methods, like placing the fish in a bag, the Chinese woman’s choice to tie and drag the fish is seen as a cruel act that is hard to justify.
