Real-Life Hogwarts Express in Peril: Will It Vanish from History?

The Jacobite Train, famously known as the real-life version of the Hogwarts Express, faces the risk of disappearing into history starting next January.

The Jacobite Train could cease operations due to non-compliance with safety regulations.

The Jacobite Train is an old steam locomotive operating in Scotland, UK. It crosses the Glenfinnan Viaduct featured in the movie Harry Potter, earning it the nickname “Harry Potter Train.” It’s a popular attraction, with about 750 tourists boarding the train daily during peak season.

Given its popularity, the UK rail system regulatory body has requested the installation of additional locking devices on the doors of the Jacobite Train’s passenger cars for the safety of passengers. According to the regulations, the Jacobite train must cease operations unless it installs the other locking devices.

However, WCR(West Coast Railways) oversees the Jacobite train and legally objected to this. They argue that the cost of installing the locking devices would exceed 8 million euros (approximately $9 million), making it difficult to comply.

The final verdict is expected to come out in January next year. If authorities reject the objection and decide to cease train operations, the Harry Potter train will no longer be available for rides. Customers are steadily buying tickets for the 2024 season despite an uncertain future. You can make reservations for the Jacobite train on the official WCR website.
