Is Your Shower Drain Clogged with Hair? Here’s What It Could Mean

It’s normal to lose some hair while shampooing. However, there may be times when it feels like more hair is falling out than usual, leading to concerns about potential hair loss.

Let’s look at the symptoms of suspected hair loss and prevention methods compiled by the American health magazine Health.

American dermatologist Julia Schwartz explained, “Many people worry about hair loss by looking at the amount of hair that falls out during shower,” adding, “Losing up to 100 strands of hair daily is normal.”

She continued, “Hair loss is a natural part of hair growth cycle, particularly with aging. Even if a lot of hair falls out, if the scalp is not noticeably visible, it’s a normal hair growth cycle.”

So why does it seem like more hair falls out in the shower, even when it’s not hair loss?

When washing hair, loose strands that have already fallen out are washed away along with those shed during the shower. Even if the actual amount of hair that falls out each day is the same, this can create the perception of increased hair loss.

However, specific symptoms may indicate potential hair loss, such as ▲hair falling out in round circular patterns, ▲ gradual expansion of hair loss areas, ▲shedding clumps of hair at once,  or ▲failure to regrow in specific areas.

Also, combing damp hair after a shower or rubbing the scalp vigorously with a towel can exacerbate hair loss. After showering, the scalp’s pores are more open than usual, so stimulation can cause hair to fall out more easily.

Maintaining scalp health is crucial for preventing hair loss. This involves keeping a balanced diet rich in proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals, with particular emphasis on nutrients like Vitamin A, Vitamin D, and iron, which promote hair health.
