Hot Pot Horror: Mice Falls From the Ceiling! Food Hygiene Nightmare Strikes

Amidst a series of hygiene controversies, growing distrust in food safety is evident in China, where yet another food hygiene issue has emerged. This time, a video showing a mouse falling onto a diner’s head in a restaurant is causing controversy.

According to major foreign media reports on the 9th (local time), a customer, Mr. A, who visited a hot pot restaurant in Zhejiang Province in eastern China, posted a video on his social media network.

In the video, several rats suddenly fell from the ceiling while two male customers were eating. One of the rats landed on a customer’s head, causing the diners to scramble away in shock. Mr. A reported that he was “scratched by the rat” and had to receive medical treatment.

Internet users who saw the video reacted with comments such as “Is this a sign that we should eat rat meat in hot pot?”, “How bad is the hygiene?”, and “We’ve reached an era where we have to wear helmets while eating”.

The restaurant in question is currently reported to be closed. Local authorities are conducting an on-site investigation and have announced that they will “strengthen the supervision of food production and public safety”.

Meanwhile, despite the authorities’ promises to prevent a recurrence, the controversy related to hygiene continues unabated, perpetuating the unease over food safety in China. In October last year, an international controversy arose when a video presumed to show a man urinating into malt at a Tsingtao beer factory in Pingdu City, Shandong Province, was released.

On the 2nd, a video of a rat gnawing on raw meat placed on an open kitchen counter of a restaurant went viral on social media, causing controversy. On the 12th, a victim who tried to consume a two-year-old medicinal liquor infused with a seahorse, only to discover that the seahorse was plastic, also made the issue public.
