Woman Who Never Drove Gets Hit with $3,000 Car Accident Claim – Here’s Why

A 70-year-old woman, Ms. A, who has never driven in her life, received a claim from an insurance company last May to compensate for accident processing fees she did not incur, KBS reported on the 7th.

Ms. A neither had a driver’s license nor owned a car.

According to the report, a man engaged in fraud using a copy of Ms. A’s ID to register for car insurance. In an interview with the media, Ms. A’s son disclosed, “She remained completely unaware of her insurance enrollment until the claim arose. During preparations for a trip, she provided an acquaintance with a copy of her ID, believing it was necessary for registration purposes. Unfortunately, that copy was exploited for the insurance fraud.”

Ms. A’s signature on the insurance application was also forged, but the verification process was lax. If relevant documents such as a copy of the ID and the application form were prepared, insurance could be obtained without any separate identity verification process.

Since she did not know about her insurance enrollment, she ended up bearing the burden of accident processing costs totaling at least 4 million won (approximately $3,400). Her only option is to submit a complaint to the Financial Supervisory Service and the insurance company.

Ms. A has filed complaints with the Financial Supervisory Service and the insurance company. She has filed a police report against the man who stole her identity and the insurance planner on charges of document forgery and fraud.

Regarding this matter, a complaint handler from the insurance company stated that the company would take actions based on the findings of the judicial authorities. Additionally, the insurance company acknowledged that it was confirmed their insurance planner did not obtain a handwritten signature from Ms. A, and they committed to implementing measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
