Neglected Elderly Woman in China Leaves Fortune to Pets Instead of Children

The story of a Chinese woman who left her fortune of 20 million yuan (approximately $3.1 million) to an unexpected recipient has sparked controversy.

A few years ago, a Chinese woman, Ms. A, had written a will to divide her property among her three children.

However, she changed her decision after waiting and seeing her children’s indifference after drafting the will.

Ms. A described her children, “They never checked up on me when I was sick, and they hardly ever contacted me.”

As a result, Ms. A decided to hand over all her assets to her dog and cat, the only living beings that were always by her side.

Ms. A amended her will to state that all her money would be used to care for her pets and their offspring after her death.

Current Chinese law prohibits people from directly entrusting their possessions to pets, but Ms. A found a solution after consulting with a lawyer.

She designated an animal hospital as her property manager, requesting them to look after her pets.

A staff member at the Beijing China Will Registration Center said, “The current situation could put her assets at risk.”

They further explained, “Ms. A’s decision is unilateral, thus we advised her to appoint a trustworthy person who can supervise the veterinary clinic to ensure that the pets are properly cared for.”

Her decision inspired many people in China, and most expressed sympathy for her situation.

One netizen said, “Good for her. If my daughter treats me poorly in the future, I might have to leave my house to someone else too.”
