Son Heung Min shared, “I apologize for the late expression of gratitude due to focusing on the Asian Cup games many people were looking forward to.”

He continued, “I returned to London with a disappointed, heavy heart, but I arrived safely. I feel like I fell short as captain and failed to follow through in leading the team.”

Finally, he wrote, “Despite the outcome, I appreciate all the love and support and was proud to be a South Korean soccer player. Thank you, and I apologize.” expressing his sorrow once again.

The team under Klinsmann suffered a crushing 0-2 defeat in the semi-finals of the 2023 AFC Asian Cup against Jordan at the Ahmed bin Ali Stadium in Al Rayyan, Qatar, on February 7 (KST).

Their dream run ended in a crushing defeat, two steps shy of the finals. They were left to choke down the bitter pill of elimination, their defense crumbling and criticism stinging over zero shot on target.

The team, led by captain Son Heung Min (Tottenham) and Lee Kang In, Kim Min Jae, Hwang Hee Chan, and Choe Gue Sung, was considered the “strongest ever” and faced domestic and international criticism.

Son Heung Min apologized repeatedly after the game. He also made a statement that seemed to hint at retirement: “The coach might not consider me anymore. I’m not sure about the future.”

After the game, Son Heung Min was captured looking defeated with his head held low at Hamad International Airport in Doha, Qatar, to return to Tottenham.
