No Peek into the World of VR Porn: Vision Pro’s Major Flaw Unveiled

[By Daily Impact Guest Reporter Lee Jin-won] Apple’s ambitious Vision Pro product has been embroiled in a serious “drawback” controversy less than two weeks after its release. The issue is that the Vision Pro cannot display pornographies or, more precisely, virtual reality (VR) pornographies.

Apple Vision Pro, released on February 2 (local time), has captivated tech enthusiasts worldwide and reportedly sells smoothly. However, some customers have raised issues that while it’s fine for viewing regular porn, it does not allow for the VR porn experience that is expected when purchasing immersive virtual reality products.

On Reddit, America’s largest social media platform, posts asking for successful methods to view VR porn on the Vision Pro and expressing a strong desire to view VR porn are starting to surface, along with various workarounds through hacking.

The Vision Pro is a new product from Apple after nine years, a device that allows you to experience both the real and virtual worlds at the same time.

Therefore, online speculation has consistently emerged about how the Vision Pro will change the porn viewing experience even before its release. However, the fact that VR porn cannot be viewed has led to some disappointment.

Disappointed that you can’t watch VR porn? 

Alex Novak, CEO of VR porn platform Sex Like Real, criticized Apple in an interview with American lifestyle media outlet Lifehacker, saying, “We expected Sex Like Real to work in Apple Vision Pro’s Safari browser just like it does in Meta’s browser from the beginning. However, Apple has completely turned off WebXR (an augmented and virtual reality device access programming interface) in the browser.”

VR porn can be viewed on Meta Quest 3, a competitor to Vision Pro.

There is speculation that the most significant reason Apple has made it impossible to view VR porn content on the Vision Pro is that the product is marketed as an office product. Apple is marketing the Vision Pro as an office product.

Media outlets like 10 Play have suggested that it’s not surprising that Apple has made it impossible to view VR porn on the Vision Pro, considering Steve Jobs, Apple’s now-deceased founder, clearly stated in 2010 that “Apple does not sell porn.”

“We believe we have a moral responsibility to block porn on the iPhone,” Jobs said at that time. “People who want porn can buy an Android phone.”

Smooth initial sales despite minor drawbacks 

Despite some complaints, such as the inability to watch VR porn, an excessively high price of $3499, discomfort from the device’s weight when wearing it for extended periods, and blurry texts when trying to read phone messages with the Vision Pro, the product is selling smoothly amidst initial hot reactions.

According to renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple secured approximately 80,000 units in stock for the release day, and unofficial analysis suggests that Apple sold approximately 200,000 units within nearly two weeks of its launch.

Despite its high price, the Vision Pro received a hot response among Apple enthusiasts, with 180,000 pre-orders placed before its release. Soon after pre-orders opened, the Apple stores ran out of stock, creating a sold-out situation, and delivery dates were pushed to March.

Apple has not yet disclosed the actual sales volume of the Vision Pro. However, market research firm Statista predicts that Apple will sell approximately 350,000 Vision Pros in the first year of its release, and sales in the second year will reach 1.5 million units.

Apple Marketing Director Greg Joswiak said over 1,000 basic applications exclusively for the Vision Pro have already been developed and released. This figure does not include more than 1.5 million iOS and iPad OS apps compatible with the Vision Pro.

Joswiak recently announced the release of many apps on Social Network X (formerly Twitter), saying, “I’m excited to see developers continue to push the boundaries of possibilities.”
