Camaro’s Comeback: Classic Muscle, Modern Electric Drive

Carscoops

The Chevrolet Camaro was discontinued in January 2024. Since the launch of the first generation model in 1967, it has established itself as a representative muscle car symbolizing Chevrolet for a long time, but discontinuation was inevitable. The Camaro was loved for its unique muscle car charm, with its rugged yet wild charm.

Chevrolet Vice President Scott Bell announced the discontinuation of the Camaro in 2023 and said, “We cannot reveal the successor model of the Camaro at this time, but this is not the last story of the Camaro.” Here, General Motors President Mark Reuss recently stated, ” We want the Camaro to return to its original roots and be released at a reasonable price.”

Prices Expected to be in the $22,130 – $29,505 Range

In an interview with American media outlet MotorTrend, President Mark Reuss said the Camaro could return as an electric vehicle. He said he hopes to price the Camaro electric vehicle in a similar price range to the Equinox EV. The Equinox EV is priced at $34,995 in the U.S. market.

When receiving the US electric vehicle tax credit, the price drops to $27,495. As president Mark Reuss said, if it is released as an electric vehicle priced in the $22,130 to $29, 505 range, the performance level may be lower than expected. However, it appears that consumer demand will be met by creating a separate high-performance trim.

Modified Look to Suit an Electric Vehicle

When this information was revealed, designers quickly created and released the imaginary rendering of the Camaro EV. As no specific form or release direction has been decided yet, the designer’s imagination was added. If we look at the detailed design, we can see that it is based on the design of the existing Camaro, where the thin grille and headlamps are connected.

However, the grille and headlamp lines have become cleaner to suit an electric vehicle, and the design seems to have paid attention to the coefficient of air resistance through a smooth finish. The sharp angles that create the impression of the front are the same as the existing Camaro but have changed from lines with emphasized straight lines to soft, curved lines.

Two-Tone Effect of Black and Red

On the side, black molding has been applied to the gently sloping A-pillar, creating a clean-looking front windshield. The roofline is painted in the same red color as the car body, and the B-pillar is again painted in black, creating a two-tone contrast. In the case of the roof line, the coupe’s sleek line was strengthened compared to before, and volume was added to the line extending above the rear fender.

Meanwhile, General Motors has been known to be considering the form of the Camaro electric vehicle. Like the Mustang Mach-E, which was previously launched as an electric vehicle, the design of a crossover coupe is reportedly one of several options. While various possibilities exist for the Camaro electric vehicle, attention is being paid to what form it will return in.
