China’s GWM Tank 800 Offers Rolls-Royce Features at Fraction of the Price

The Tank 800 splashed at the 2021 Shanghai Auto Show, drawing comparisons to the Rolls-Royce Cullinan. It seems poised for an earlier launch than anticipated. China Great Wall Motor has released a new spy shot of this highly anticipated top luxury model, capturing significant attention.

It is scheduled to be the most luxurious model in Great Wall Motor’s lineup and will showcase even more advanced technology based on the features of the 300 and 500. Let’s look into this model, which will set a new standard for luxury 3-row, 6-seater vehicles and raise the level of Chinese premium vehicles.

The model is not expected to differ significantly from the concept model first introduced at the 2021 Shanghai Auto Show. It maintains a similar design shape and old-style door handles to the extent that it is evaluated as a larger Tank 500. The only distinguishing feature is the inverted L-shaped light cluster at the rear.

The interior will also remain similar to what was seen in the tank lineup. The new thing is that it will be the first three-row tank SUV model with a 2+2+2 seating capacity (per row).

The Tank 800 is expected to be equipped with the Hi4-T plug-in hybrid system, which uses the same 9-speed automatic gearbox as the 700 Hi4-T. The powertrain is characteristic of a 3.0T V6 engine rather than the 2.0T unit used in other models in the lineup.

The total output is 516 horsepower and a maximum torque of 81.5kg.m. In addition, the single electric motor mounted on the front is expected to have a maximum output of 160 horsepower and a torque of 40.7 kg.m. In comparison, the vertical gasoline engine is expected to have an output of 355 horsepower and a torque of 57.1 kg.m. As for the battery, it will most likely be equipped with the same Svolt 37.1 kWh unit as the Tank 700 Hi4-T.

What’s the price range for the Tank 800?

Another feature of the Tank 800 is its spare wheel mounted under the chassis. It is also equipped with double wishbone suspension at the front and rear and air suspension, which is expected to provide consumers with a luxurious ride and driving experience.

An internal combustion engine model is also expected. Still, it is not sure, and the performance of this PHEV version will likely be used to confirm whether a successor model will be launched. As for the price, the Tank 800 is known to be about  500,000 yuan (69,200 USD), making it a much cheaper price range than the comparative model Rolls-Royce Cullinan.
