Why BMW’s E46 M3 Is Worth More Than the Latest Model

BMW’s high-performance Division M has the unique feature that older models are loved more than new models due to sufficient performance and unique personality even after many years. This is especially true for the 3 Series’ high-performance model, the M3. People who have tasted the exceptional handling of the 3 Series equipped with the Silky Six in-line 6-cylinder engine will fall in love with its charm.

That’s why all BMW enthusiasts are on high alert when an old M3 appears on the used market or at an auction. In this situation, an old M3 boasting an elegant appearance recently appeared at auction in the US. Let’s look at which models appeared and at what price.

The 2004 BMW E46 M3 is considered the best model among all existing M3s. At launch, it sold over 85,000 units with near-perfect performance and design, making it one of the second-best-selling BMW models after the F body.

Moreover, this vehicle is painted in Laguna Seca Blue, a significant color used for the first time on a BMW M model. According to available information, only 19 E46 M3s featuring this color combined with a Nappa leather interior exist in the US. Consequently, its value has skyrocketed. The current bidding price has soared well above $99,000.

$99,000 is enough to purchase the newly released BMW M3, yet there is more interest in the E46 M3 model. There are countless reasons for this, but the driving range stands out most. The most representative example is that it is in almost new condition, with only about 29,000 miles (approximately 45,570 km) driven.

The genuine 18-inch BMW M wheels, 3.2L naturally aspirated 6-cylinder engine, and 6-speed manual transmission can be enough to purchase the model even if customers pay more than $99,000. The vehicle owner expressed their pride, saying, “I have maintained it well for 20 years with all inspections completed.”

There is a reason why people are more enthusiastic about past M3 models. Recently, the engine has been replaced with a turbocharger instead of naturally aspirated, and the body has become larger than before, resulting in increased weight. Hence, it feels like the identity of the 3 Series has faded somewhat. However, this was not the case with the M3 of the past.
