In collaboration with China’s JAC Motors (JAC), Volkswagen has unveiled a new coupe-body electric crossover, the ID.UNYX. This model, strategically targeted at the Chinese market, is scheduled to launch in China at the end of July 2024. Volkswagen aims to introduce five types of electric vehicles, including the ID.UNYX, in China by 2027.

Volkswagen is intensifying its focus on the Chinese market through partnerships with several Chinese automobile companies. The company has established agreements with major Chinese automakers such as FAW, Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation Group (SAIC), and Xpeng to commence the development of new vehicles.

Maximum Output of 228 Horsepower
621 km Range on a Single Charge

In ID.UNYX’s basic trim uses a single motor specification based on rear-wheel drive, generating a maximum output of 228 horsepower. In the high-performance model, a 107-horsepower motor is added to the front wheels, driving it in four-wheel drive and producing 335 horsepower. All trims are equipped with an 82.4 kWh battery pack from China’s CATL.

Based on Chinese standards, this provides a driving range of 621 km (386 miles) per charge. In the case of dual motor specification, it has a driving range of 565 km (351 miles). According to Chinese media, ID.UNYX’s body is 4,663 mm (183.6 inches) in length, 1,860 mm (73.2 inches) in width, 1,610 mm (63.4 inches) in height, and 2,766 mm (108.9 inches) in wheelbase, making it a compact-sized vehicle.

Horizontal Light Bar Applied
Angular Design Achieved

Compared to the Kia Sportage, the length is 3 mm (0.1 inches) longer, the wheelbase is 11 mm (0.4 inches) longer, and the width is 5 mm (0.2 inches) wider. The height is 50 mm (2.0 inches) lower as it has coupe-like lines. In terms of appearance, it is based on the electric SUV Cupra Tavascan, unveiled in 2023 by Cupra, a brand under the Volkswagen Group. However, some detailed changes have been made to match the family look of Volkswagen’s ID. series.

In the case of the front part, there was a horizontally extending light bar and square headlamps. For the end of the headlamp, it extends sharply toward the rear quarter panel, creating a sporty look. The front fascia features a black high-gloss garnish, a front lip, and an angled bumper grill design.

Interior Equipped with Large Display
Simple Configuration

Furthermore, the design features distinct elements such as the A-pillar, rocker panel, and rear diffuser, all finished in the same black color as the Tavascan, emphasizing a unified aesthetic. The roof line adopts a coupe body style that tapers into the sleek, fastback shape. At the rear, horizontal tail lamps, similar to those at the front, stretch across to enhance the vehicle’s overall width. Inside the tail lamps, pixel-shaped graphics are used, with each pixel varying in size and detail to create a unique design distinction.

The interior was not revealed, but part was shown in previously captured spy shots. The driver’s seat has a three-spoke wheel and a large display in the center. Most functions and the infotainment system can be operated through the display. The center console features a simple configuration with only two cup holders and a wireless charging pad.
