Mercedes-Benz’s high-performance brand AMG is attracting attention with the news that it is preparing a new flagship electric SUV model based on its electric vehicle platform. Currently, high-performance SUVs include the BMW XM and Lotus Eletre. In this situation, other manufacturers are also keeping their guard with the news of the launch of the AMG high-performance SUV.

There is little accurate information or news, so direct comparison with other models is difficult. Let’s briefly compare it with BMW’s similar electric SUV, XM, expected to be its biggest competitor based on information conveyed in various overseas communities and media.

Successor to AMG GLE 63
Results compared to XM

The high-performance electric SUV scheduled to be developed and produced by AMG is unlikely to use any other Mercedes-Benz platforms. It is expected to be the second to use AMG’s independent platform, following the second-generation GT four-door coupe competing with the Porsche Taycan, which is scheduled to be released in 2025. In terms of position, it is expected to succeed the current AMG GLE 63 model.

Based on the AMG EA platform, it will use an 800V architecture and a high-performance battery pack. It will be equipped with Yasa’s axial flux electric motor, developed exclusively for AMG. In terms of functionality, it is expected to be equipped with various latest technologies, including torque vectoring and self-leveling active suspension systems, and adopt four-wheel drive steering. The vehicle is also expected to be similar in length to the Vision AMG Concept.

Size Difference Likely Negligible
Mercedes-Benz Expected to Outperform

When compared to BMW XM based on the information mentioned above, It is expected that there will be no difference in size from the XM, which has a length of about 5,150 mm (202.76 inches), a width of 2.000 mm (78.74 inches), and a height of 1,800 mm (78.87 inches). In the case of XM, The combination of the 8-cylinder engine and the electric motor produces an output of about 750 horsepower, and it only takes about 3 seconds to reach 100 km/h (62 mph).

On the other hand, AMG’s new SUV is expected to provide an output of well over 1,000 horsepower by offering various options such as dual motor, tri-motor, and quad motor. Compared to XM, which uses both gasoline and electricity, the fact that it only uses pure electricity seems to be a differentiating factor. There is no additional information about the Mercedes-Benz AMG’s powertrain yet, so it is unlikely to be equipped with an internal combustion engine.

Expected to Launch in 2026
The price is estimated at around $150K

The official launch is expected in 2026 and will be produced at the Mercedes-Benz factory in Germany. The specific price has not yet been mentioned. However, considering the BMW XM’s price of approximately $160,000 and the Lotus Eletre’s price in the $150,000 range, it is expected to be similarly priced or more expensive.
