Japanese Singer’s Discomfort with Breathing and Sharing Air

Japanese singer Ano sparked conversation after revealing an unusual aversion: she dislikes hearing people breathe and prefers solo elevator rides to avoid sharing air.

Ano appeared on the Japanese Nippon Television show “Shabekuri 007” on March 18 and confessed her strong aversion to the sound of breathing, to the point that she cannot ride an elevator with others.

“The sound of breathing is unbearable for me,” Ano declared, “even my own. I try to hold it in whenever possible, and I honestly wish everyone else would, too.” Her comments surprised the audience.

Ano further elaborated on her aversion to shared spaces, admitting her dislike for riding elevators with others. She confessed to going to such lengths as skipping elevators entirely if someone else was present and even repeatedly pressing the “close” button to prevent anyone from joining her mid-ride. These confessions drew disapproval from the audience.

During the show, Ano also confessed her ignorance about housekeeping. She admitted, “I can’t do laundry. I have a modern washing machine, but I have no idea how to use it,” and “I don’t even know the difference between detergent and fabric softener.” She revealed, “I’m running out of usable towels. If I don’t have a towel, I dry myself with tissues; if I don’t, I use my pants.”

Ano’s confessions extended to household chores, leaving the audience both amused and concerned. She admitted to being completely lost when it comes to laundry. “Fancy washing machine? Check. Knowledge of how to use it? Nope,” she shared. She even confessed to mistaking detergent for fabric softener. “Things get a little rough on the towel front,” she admitted, “when I run out, tissues become my drying method, and when I don’t have tissues, I use my pants.”

Ano’s confessions sparked a flurry of online debate. Commenters pointed out the irony of her extreme sensitivity to sound while neglecting basic chores, with comments like, “Can’t handle someone breathing, but can’t handle laundry either?”

Ano debuted as a member of the idol group You’ll Melt More! in 2013 and has been active as a vocalist and guitarist for the band I’s since leaving the group in 2020.
