Putin Denies Cold War-style Alliance with China, Focuses on High-Tech Ties

Russian President Vladimir Putin has claimed that Russia and China are not forming a military alliance similar to the Cold War era.

According to CNBC on the 8th (local time), President Putin made this statement during a meeting with a Chinese Ministry of Defense delegation visiting Moscow. Zhang Youxia, China’s second highest-ranking military official, was also present at the meeting.

President Putin said, “Russia and China are not building a military alliance based on the Cold War model,” adding, “However, cooperation between the two countries is a crucial element in stabilizing international affairs.”

President Putin highlighted that “cooperation in the field of advanced technology is now being prioritized” and “it is important for the two countries to develop a closer military relationship further.” He added, “This includes new weapons that will ensure the strategic security of both countries, along with assets in high orbit (satellites) and other space-related areas.”

He also praised President Xi Jinping, mentioning, “We have an amicable and personal relationship, which is contributing to the development of relations between our two countries.”

On the other hand, he criticized the West for shaking international affairs. He explained, “The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is trying to go beyond its geographical framework, and the U.S. is increasingly pulling its allies into stirring up tensions in the Asia-Pacific region. We are responding to all this with a calm and balanced attitude along with our allies.”

Vice Chairman Zhang responded, “Under President Putin’s leadership, Russia firmly resists Western sanctions. China respects this.” He added, “We welcome the model of strategic trust and mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries. This visit to Russia will help to strengthen military cooperation further.”
