North Korea successfully launched a new type of satellite carrier rocket, Cholima-1, carrying the reconnaissance satellite Manrikyong-1 from the West Sea Satellite Launch Site in Cholsan County, Pyonganbuk-do, at 10:42:28 PM on the 21st, according to Chosun Central TV on the 22nd. It was reported that Kim Jong-un, chairman of the State Affairs Commission, observed the launch on-site and “warmly congratulated the officials, scientists, and technicians of the National Aerospace Technology General Bureau and related organizations.” Photo provided by Chosun Central TV·Yonhap News

The People Power Party warned on the 22nd that North Korea’s military reconnaissance satellite launch is a “clear violation of the UN Security Council resolution prohibiting the use of ballistic missile technology.” It will be a spark that will lead to the collapse of the Kim Jong-un regime.

Park Jung-ha, the chief spokesperson for the People Power Party, commented on the day, stating, “The Kim Jong-un regime finally carried out a surprise launch of the third military reconnaissance satellite on the night of the 21st.”

He said, “The People Power Party strongly condemns this launch, which is a provocation against not only the Republic of Korea but also the entire international community,” and emphasized, “The South Korean government has clearly stated that the cause of the heightened tension on the Korean Peninsula lies entirely with the Kim Jong-un regime, and it will definitely hold them accountable if they carry out a military provocation.”

He added, “North Korea’s military provocation will lead to international isolation and economic deterioration, only hastening the collapse of the regime.”

Chief Spokesperson Park added, “The People Power Party and the Yoon Seok-yeol administration will take any measures necessary to protect the lives and property of the people of the Republic of Korea, as well as democracy and freedom.”

North Korea launched the first military reconnaissance satellite, Malligyong-1, at around 10:43 PM the previous night. The Korean Central News Agency announced about three hours after the launch that it had “accurately entered orbit,” indicating that the launch was successful. Chairman of the State Affairs Commission Kim Jong-un observed the launch at the West Sea Satellite Launch Site in Cholsan County, Pyonganbuk-do.

In response, our government held an interim cabinet meeting at the Government Seoul Office this morning and decided to suspend the clause limiting reconnaissance capabilities against North Korea in the 9·19 Military Agreement between South and North Korea. President Yoon Suk Yeol, who is visiting the UK as a state guest, immediately approved the 9·19 Military Agreement Partial Suspension Proposal.
