U.S. Official Reports Xi’s Peaceful Reunification Preference

During a summit with U.S. President Joe Biden, Chinese President Xi Jinping reportedly stated that there are no plans for military action against Taiwan in the coming years.

On the 15th (local time), foreign media, including Reuters, quoted a high-ranking U.S. official saying, “President Xi suggested that he is not preparing for a large-scale invasion of Taiwan during the meeting held near San Francisco, in Woodside.”

According to the official, President Xi conveyed to President Biden that China prefers peaceful reunification with Taiwan. However, he also mentioned conditions under which force could be used.

Chinese Foreign Ministry’s Response to Xi’s Remarks

Furthermore, the Chinese Foreign Ministry stated, “At the meeting today, President Xi said, ‘The Taiwan issue is the most important and sensitive in Sino-US relations. China takes seriously the positive statement the U.S. has made. The U.S. should take genuine action not to support Taiwan’s independence and armament.'”

In response, a U.S. official emphasized, “The U.S. approach does not change according to President Xi’s remarks.”

Xi’s Past Statements on Taiwan

Previously, President Xi stated at the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party in October last year, “We do not promise to give up the use of force. We will leave all options open to take all necessary measures (for Taiwan’s reunification).”

Meanwhile, the U.S.-China summit discussed various issues during a four-hour meeting, including restoring military dialogue channels between the two countries, cooperation in artificial intelligence, fentanyl, and the Middle East crisis that started with Hamas’s attack on Israel.
