Experiment Results: It’s Revealed Why Working Late Shift Promotes Eating

The reason why night shift work affects appetite has been revealed.

A research team led by Professor Becky Conway-Campbell of the Bristol University School of Medicine in the UK has announced research results that night shift work causes changes in brain function that control the hormone regulating appetite, thereby stimulating appetite, according to Medical Express on the 12th.

Through experiments with mice, the research team revealed that jet-lag fatigue caused by the mismatch of circadian rhythms due to night shifts affects the hormone that regulates appetite.

The research team focused on the corticosteroid hormone secreted from the adrenal gland, which regulates many physiological functions, including metabolism and appetite.

Corticosteroid hormones are known to directly control brain peptides that regulate appetitive behavior. Some peptides are involved in increasing appetite, while others are involved in suppressing it.

The research team conducted a study on rats exposed to a mismatch of day and night and rats that were not.

As a result, rats with a mismatched day and night rhythm were found to eat significantly more food during inactive periods due to the control disorder of the hypothalamic neuropeptide (NYT) in the brain.

Rats with a normal day and night rhythm ate 88.4% of their daily meals during active hours and only 11.6% during inactive hours.

However, rats with a mismatched day and night rhythm ate 53.8% of their daily meals during inactive hours. This amount of food consumed during inactive hours is a whopping 4.6 times more than that of the control group rats.

The research team explained that these results demonstrate that brain neuropeptides can be drug targets for eating disorders and obesity treatment.

The results of this study were published in the latest issue of ‘Communications Biology’, a British biological journal.
