Barcelona is a city teeming with attractions, and even a week may not suffice to see everything it offers. Many visitors find it challenging to leave without missing out on something exciting.

Montserrat is another gem worth visiting in the vicinity of Barcelona.

Montserrat is a mountain located near Barcelona in the Catalonia region. It takes approximately an hour by train from Barcelona to reach Montserrat.

While it is famous as a popular destination near Barcelona, the one-hour journey may deter some from making the trip. Montserrat is also renowned as the place that inspired Antoni Gaudí in his architectural pursuits.

One of the most iconic attractions in Montserrat is the Montserrat Monastery. Numerous tourists flock to this place, making it a must-visit attraction in Montserrat. Visitors can take a cable car or a mountain train from Montserrat to reach the Montserrat Monastery.

Taking the cable car from Montserrat train station to the monastery takes approximately 5 minutes. Alternatively, the mountain train ride to ascend the rocky mountain takes around 20 minutes. Opting for the train offers a closer view of the majestic rocky landscape.

Perched at 725 meters, the monastery nestles among the rock formations, hiding within the mountains and encircled by limestone cliffs. The towering rocky peaks above the monastery create a picturesque setting.

People say Antoni Gaudí drew inspiration from Montserrat Monastery for the Sagrada Familia’s construction. Montserrat Monastery, one of the world’s four major pilgrimage sites, continuously attracts pilgrims.

Within the confines of the monastery, a cherished treasure awaits the Black Madonna, a statue believed to have originated in the 10th century. According to legend, efforts to relocate this sacred statue during the 11th century proved futile, ultimately leading to the monastery’s founding at this very location.

Visitors from near and far make pilgrimages to this site, drawn by the opportunity to touch the statue and offer prayers, firmly believing in the power of the Black Madonna to grant their heartfelt wishes.

Additionally, Montserrat Monastery serves as the headquarters of the Escolania de Montserrat, one of the world’s top three boys’ choirs. Known for their angelic voices, the choir performs concerts lasting approximately one hour at 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM from Monday to Friday, offering visitors a chance to experience heavenly melodies.
