Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi during his visit to Moscow, Russia, on September 7 (local time). The two leaders strongly criticized the United States and the West for their support of Israel. They claim it has led to the massacre in the Gaza Strip. Also, they demonstrated the amity between their nations. Amid fluctuating global oil prices, President Putin is intensifying his diplomatic efforts in the Middle East. He met with the leaders of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) before a meeting with Iran’s president.

According to Russia’s TASS news agency, President Raisi stated during his meeting with President Putin at the Kremlin in Moscow, “What is happening in Palestine is a genocide and a crime against humanity.” He expressed his concerns, noting that the United States and Western countries are backing actions he considers wrongful. In response, Putin emphasized the significance of addressing the current issues in the Middle East, focusing on the situation in Palestine.

The two leaders reiterated their emphasis on peace in the Middle East and the strong ties between their nations, which are under Western sanctions. Both countries have positioned themselves as mediators in the Middle East, particularly criticizing Israel, the United States, and the West for the recent armed conflict between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

President Putin actively engaged in Middle East diplomacy, consecutively visiting the UAE and Saudi Arabia. With the start of increasing international oil price volatility, he has been discussing oil production cooperation issues with Middle Eastern oil-producing countries and strengthening cooperation on the conflict issue between Israel and Hamas.

Reports indicate that President Putin is planning a visit to Iran soon. Putin’s most recent visit to Iran was in July of last year. At that time, Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader, met with President Putin, criticized the West, and expressed support for Russia’s special military operations in Ukraine.
