France has, for the first time in its history, appointed an openly gay Prime Minister.

On the 9th (local time), French President Emmanuel Macron appointed Gabriel Attal (34), the Minister of Education as the new Prime Minister. Attal is the youngest-ever Prime Minister in French history and the first openly gay one.

To inject new vitality into the remaining three years of his term, President Macron accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne (62), who had been in office for less than two years, and appointed Minister of Education Attal as the new Prime Minister.

In France, the real power lies with the President, not the Prime Minister. However, Attal is receiving significant media attention due to his status as the youngest-ever Prime Minister, his open homosexuality, and his good looks.

He is considered one of President Macron’s most trusted confidants and a strong candidate for future leadership. His exceptional appearance has made him one of the most recognizable figures in the French cabinet.

After being elected to the French National Assembly in June 2017, Attal served as the Minister of Youth and Education in 2018, Government Spokesperson in 2020, and Minister of Public Accounts in 2022.

The previous youngest Prime Minister was Laurent Fabius, who was appointed at the age of 37 in 1984.

Attal, a graduate of the prestigious Paris Institute of Political Studies (Sciences Po), served under then Health Minister Marisol Touraine in 2012, writing speeches and performing other duties. He was elected as a local councilor in 2014.

Attal, a member of the Socialist Party until 2016, joined President Macron’s newly formed Renaissance Party and quickly rose through the ranks. He served as the party’s spokesperson in 2018. In October of that year, he became the Minister of State for Education at the age of 29, setting a record for the youngest person to hold the position. In July 2020, he moved to the role of Government Spokesperson. In May 2022, he became the Minister of Public Accounts, and in July 2023, he took up the post of Minister of Education.
